Books and Podcasts for Aspiring actors

Updated: Jul 18

Personally I'm a huge reader, I always have been, when people are wanting to learn more about a topic, I always have a few books READY for them to check out! So I thought I'd share that list with you all:

Books for Aspiring Actors and Creatives:

The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron: This one was a Covid-lockdown read for me and it completely transformed the way that I see art and creativity. I love the workbook aspect because it has you constantly applying what you are learning!

The Actor's Life: A Survival Guide by Jenna Fischer: If you are as DIE HARD of a fan of the office or a good underdog story, this book is for you! I loved reading about her honest struggles in Hollywood and the tactics that she uses to break down some key insights into acting in Hollywood.

Confessions of a Casting Director by Jen Rudin: This comprehensive guide to Hollywood is perfect for any aspiring actor! I was fortunate to hear Jen Rudin speak to my directing class in college and her words hold some serious power!

The War of Art by Steven Pressfield: Another college read! This book breaks down the importance of creativity in your life and how to overcome the naysayer within.

The Power of the Actor The Chubbuck Technique: I love learning other principles and techniques behind acting! This book is written by the coach who instructed Charlize Theron, Halle Berry and more!

Someday, Someday Maybe By Lauren Graham: This charming novel is written by the star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood. I love hearing her unique voice in this fiction about an aspiring actor trying to find her way in the industry!

There are so many more amazing books out there, this truly is just the tip of the iceberg of what I recommend that people should read!

Now that podcasts have made a HUGE comeback as of late, there are some awesome podcasts for creatives to listen to! Here are a couple of my favorites.

Podcasts for Creatives:

Off Camera with Sam Jones: Both a video series and a podcast, you can hear AMAZING testimonies from some of Hollywood's most beloved actors and creators including John Goodman and Jessica Chastain to name a few.

Media and Monuments: Created by the Women in Film and Video in DC, they bring a variety of guests from actors, producers to media creators and share their unique insights on "making it" in this industry!

The Office Ladies: Yes, my Office fan side is showing again. But in all seriousness Angela and Jenna (Angela and Pam) do an amazing job breaking down episodes and telling unique behind the scenes stories in this rewatch! They have amazing guests on the podcast including Steve Carell and Greg Daniels!

Survive This Crit: If you love analyzing horror movies, this may be the podcast for you! It also takes the question "Could you survive this horror movie?" quite literally by creating unique Role playing games to see if the host can survive against the killer. (not to mention, I'm one of the hosts of this new podcast)

The Filmmakers Podcast: This podcast talks to some of Hollywoods hottest filmmakers and dives deep into their craft, an absolute joy to listen to!

So, enjoy! Dive deep and enjoy these beautiful stories and insights that other creatives have shared.
