The Right Fit- Actor Outfit Edition

Updated: Jul 18

So, the title is a bit of a pun, "the right fit" refers to BOTH the outfit an actor wears while auditioning AND being the right match for the role, so without further ado, let's get into it!

Picking out outfits is important even and ESPECIALLY when getting your headshots done. (But, I will write more about that in a later blog!)

When it comes to outfits for auditions, here are some crucial things to keep in mind:

  1. Read the character description: there may be clear indicators about the the appearance of the character that are impacted by the wardrobe or they may clearly describe in the sides what the character is wearing!

  2. Look at Past Work: Especially for commercial roles, look at what the brand has filmed previously, that will try and give you a good idea of what types of clothes have been worn on shoots in the past, this will give you a good idea of where to go!

  3. Avoid Graphics and busy Patterns: Graphics are a no no, same with logos but a simple pattern can be a good choice especially if it's not distracting to camera! (Like my green polka-dot dress in the pictures above)

  4. Have an Actor's Capsule Wardrobe: Have some solid color shirts (or minimal print) that make you look your best and feel confident in the scenes when there is no physical description! Same with Pants or dresses! Have solid color options that are flattering on you no matter the circumstances, and more importantly, outfits that make YOU feel great.

  5. Make sure your clothes fit: Speaking from experience, I have a tendency of wearing clothes that fit loosely on me and I had no idea initially how it warped Casting's view of how my body appeared on camera. And sometimes you may not know how well your clothes fit, so make sure to look back at the footage to see how things look on camera or even send it to a friend for their feedback!
